The Fox & Hounds, Ainthorpe, North York Moors
The Fox & Hounds is a charming traditional village inn with roots stretching right back to the 16th century. It lies towards the northern edge of the North York Moors National Park in the village of Ainthorpe, near Castleton and Danby.
Owners Vicky and Colin have created a welcoming holiday home for horses, with a choice of loose-boxes and a paddock, while the inn offers a cosy and relaxing environment at the end of a good day’s ride – and excellent food. There's enough accommodation for larger groups here, if you're looking for a short break with riding friends. You might also like to make use of the sauna to soothe any aching muscles!
From Ainthorpe you can have fantastic and dramatic rides across the Moors, with lanes and bridleways leading to remote and historic places such as Westerdale and Fryupdale, and villages like Lealholm and Glaisdale. With careful planning and advice from the staff team, you can design your rides to include refreshment stops at pubs or cafes - always a bonus!
If your rides don’t take a full day or you feel like a non-riding day, Whitby is a short train ride away on the Esk Valley local line, with Danby Station just half a mile from Ainthorpe. There are plenty of other opportunities for non-riding partners, too - the North Yorkshire Moors Heritage Railway runs from nearby Grosmont and Goathland, and the National Park's Moors Centre is just a mile and a half away at Danby. On summer evenings you may see a game of quoits taking place on the pitch opposite the pub. The game dates back to Viking times and nowadays is played very little outside North Yorkshire.
